MA PA CME Specific Requirement Resources - Opiate CME
- Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 94C, Section 18:
- PA’s must obtain CME related to prescription of controlled substances and must complete CMEs in one of the following topics:
- Effective pain management
- Risks of abuse and addiction with opiate medication
- ID of patients at risk for substance use disorders
- Counseling patients re: side effects, addictive nature, and proper storage and disposal of prescription medications
- Appropriate prescription quantities for prescription medications that have increased risk of abuse
- Opioid antagonists, overdose prevention treatments, and means by which patients can find resources regarding, access care and use opioid antagonists and overdose prevention treatments
- PA’s must complete course material related to prescription of controlled substances once per licensing cycle

- Per Mass.Gov PA license renewal process, in regards to opioid CME: “Until the Board develops standards for appropriate training that meets the new statutory requirements, the Board refers you to an educational program offered by the Boston University School of Medicine, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the New England Division of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Massachusetts Hospital Association.”

- Domestic Violence
- Acts of 2014, Chapter 260, An Act Relative to Domestic Violence, Section 9
- Requires medical professionals to take expert-developed CME course regarding care of victims of domestic violence
- PAs are only required to take this course once, as detailed by Board of Registration of Physician Assistants (BORPA)
- “An applicant for renewal, revival or reinstatement of licensure who has previously completed a program or course approved by the Board shall not be required to participate in a subsequent program or course of domestic violence and sexual violence training except where the Board, in its discretion, requires completion of such a program or course as a condition of renewal, revival or reinstatement of licensure.”

- Dementia Training
- Pursuant to Acts of 2018, Chapter 220, applications for initial licensure must complete a one-time course of training and education in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with cognitive impairments, including, but not limited to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
- There is no determined number of hours or courses required by the state
- Any training or education provided or completed as part of course of studies in your academic program, through professional staff development, conferences, seminars or CMEs will meet requirements of the training
*Of note when you apply for licensure or re-licensure you will be prompted to attest to the completion of opioid and Alzheimer’s/Dementia and will provide links to available relevant training
